Saliva washes the mouth out and acts as natural protection against caries. As well as increasing the risk of caries, insufficient saliva can also lead to loose teeth, sores in the mouth and fungal infections. Calcium, phosphate and bicarbonate are three important substances in the saliva.
Calcium and phosphate help to repair tooth decay that has already occurred, while bicarbonate helps to reduce the acidity of the bacterial deposits on the teeth. The more saliva, the better.
